Netbooks F.A.Q.

What's different about FanCC netbooks?

Most RPG sites simply collect material without any screening or evaluation, keeping the best as well as the worst submissions. You have no way of finding the good stuff except to read through all of it. On the other hand, the FanCC works with its authors to edit and improve their work until it meets our quality standards. We also rate each item in our netbooks on various criteria so you can better judge whether they will fit into your game.

How does the FanCC work?

The purpose of the FanCC is to publish free d20 supplements online. The FanCC is composed of a number of individual netbook teams and a core council that takes care of some of their administrative tasks and helps them organize their efforts. All our publications are compliant with the d20 and Open Gaming Licenses. We publish the works of our authors but do not own their work. Each author signs a permission agreement wherein they give us permission to publish any original submissions they send us using the OGL. Nearly all our work is Open Gaming Content meaning it can be used by anyone without permission or compensation.

How do the Netbooks Teams work?

Generally each netbook team is composed of a team leader and a number of reviewers. The reviewers are the heart of the team and are composed of volunteers with an interest and experience in the netbook material and the d20 system. The reviewers work to help the author improve their work, and eventually to rate it when it is finished . The goal is to help the author fully realize their idea and publish material worthy of professional publication. Nonetheless, the author always has the final say on the content of his submission. The particulars of the review process vary from one netbook to another but generally each submission is reviewed by a number of persons.

Why does it take so long to have anything reviewed and published?

All of our reviewers are volunteers and do their work for the love of the game. Reviewing and editing is also a time consuming process, not to mention time spent maintaining web sites and formatting publications. Add to that, our commitment to high quality work and expanding the frontiers of open gaming, and things start to get complicated. The best thing to do if we seem too slow, is to offer a helping hand. We need all that we can get.

How can I participate?

There are three basic ways you can be a part of the FanCC. First you can take a direct hand in things by becoming a team leader, reviewer, or board member, helping to create the netbooks themselves. Even more importantly you can become a contributor, creating the content that comprises the netbooks. Without writers and artists we would have nothing to publish. Finally, you can participate by joining our mailing list and simply telling us what you think. Everyone on the list helps decide who our leadership will be and what our policies will be in the future. Without any one of these groups we wouldn't be here. (See Participate page for more info.)

May I create my own netbook within the FanCC ?

Absolutely, that's what we're here for! However, you should be aware that producing a netbook takes time, effort, and commitment. Often, most of the work is done by the team leader, and if he fails the netbook usually does as well. One of the biggest challenges for a new netbook is gathering content, so it is advised you prepare some in advance before beginning the project.

May I borrow FanCC netbooks material for my own publication ?

Most of the FanCC netbooks content is Open Gaming Content. This means, that under the terms of the Open Gaming License, you are free to use any of our OGC material in your own creations / publications. Nonetheless, please DO NOT FORGET TO CREDIT the original authors of the material used as indicated in the License.

The FanCC Netbooks

Here is an overview of the FanCC netbooks. To know more about a particular netbook and download what they have done if any, go to their website (that you can access by clicking on the netbook's image). All netbooks websites open inside a new window.

Netbook of BLUFFSIDE
Based on a ThunderHead Games' product, this netbook gives you more POIs and NPCs to put into the "most detailed city for d20". The team makes sure all the information blends seamlessly into Bluffside, including updating the maps with the new information.
Current status: Active. To join the team, go there.
Team leader: Anna M. Dobritt

Netbook of BOOKS
This netbook gives you descriptions of various books and tomes of the mundane sort, to fill the shelves of any library found in your campaign setting.
Current status: Abandonned. Nonetheless, a netbook is available for download, plus two online books generators to create descriptions on the fly.
Team leader: Dominique Crouzet

Netbook of CLASSES
The team is currently working toward the second volume of their netbook, while the (illustrated) volume 1 is available with 40 classes. Until the volume 2 is out, updates are regularly uploaded.
Current status: Team is active, with a great number of classes to review. New reviewers are always sought as turnover tends to be important.
Team leader: Duane Nutley

Netbook of COMBAT & WARFARE
A collection of optional rules that can be used to enhance or modify the existing d20 system. This is a tool for game masters wanting to incorporate combat house rules in their game.
Current status: Team is inactive, but version 3 of the book is available.
Team leader: Paul Bartlett

Netbook of CREATURES
The Council's Encyclopedia of Lifeforms Mundane and Magical provides a new supply of monsters to surprise bored players. You may download the available netbook, or get a look at some of their monsters online.
Current status: Unknown.
Team leader: Spencer Cooley

Netbook of EQUIPMENT
Here you will find a compendium of mundane or special equipment (such as special tools for thieves) and services, but also different types of currencies, plus descriptions of shops, merchant caravans and guilds, and everything needed to deal with the economical aspect of your setting.
Current status: Team is active but waits for more submissions.
Team leader: Dennis Przybyla

Netbook of FEATS
The Netbook of Feats is the largest collection of OGC feats available online. Each is rated and edited for quality and balance.
Current status: Team is active, but overloaded with work.
Team leader: Sigfried Trent

Netbook of MAGICAL TREASURES
An effort to increase the pool of magic items available to game masters and player characters. The team has gone to great lengths to make sure that the items in this netbook are strictly by the book. It tries to avoid special or item-specific rules as much as possible, so that each item can be inserted into your campaign world seamlessly.
Current status: Team is active.
Team leader: Micah Higgins

Page of MISCELLANEOUS netbooks
This is not a netbook, but several. Here are put online those finished netbooks that do not have a team anymore. Otherwise, anybody who wish to have his own netbook put online here, provided it is original material and compliant with the OGL, can send it to me for upload.
Current status: No team.
Webmaster: Dominique Crouzet

Netbook of NPCs
The Netbook of NPCs has been created to provide GMs a tome of non-player characters (NPCs) from which to pull. This resource exists so that the GM does not have to spend time creating NPCs for his game sessions, but can use already created ones.
Current status: Team is active and waits submissions.
Team leader: Paul W. King

Netbook of PSIONICS
A nice website, but the netbook has been abandoned for a long time now. This team is open to anyone who would create it anew.
Current status: Abandoned.
Team leader: Nobody, but the volunteer who would reform a new team.

Netbook of RACES
Are you bored of dwarves, elves, and the others? Do you wish to create a very different setting? Or maybe you just need some brand new race to populate the distant exotic lands of your campaign world? The Netbook of Races provides such new races that can be used as player character races.
Current status: Team is active and waits submissions.
Team leader: Martijn Reintjes

Netbook of SCIENCE FICTION
The purpose of this netbook is to provide rules for heroic fantasy characters sent for an adventure or two in an alternate time or dimension of high/futuristic technology. Then, the new races and classes provided may enable you to play the basic d20 game in a true science-fiction setting.
Current status: Team is currently inactive.
Team leader: Dominique Crouzet

Netbook of SPELLS & MAGIC
Magic is at the core of heroic fantasy, and is probably the most exciting aspect of the game. As such, even if usually supplements do not appeal to you, do not let pass this one. There is always a use for an unknown spell, at least to make NPCs more mysterious if not to be allowed to PCs.
Current status: Team is active, but overloaded with work. New reviewers are always welcome.
Team leader: Dennis Przybyla

Netbook of TIME
A compilation of ideas on how incorporating chronomancy into your campaign. This netbook not only gives you classes and spells related to time travel, but also everything to deal with the problems game masters may face with time paradoxes and other aspects of chronomancy.
Current status: Team is semi-active; netbook is in its final stage.
Team leader: Ian Cheeseman

Netbook of TRAPS
This essential and much useful netbook is abandoned. Nonetheless, the volume 1 is available for download, on its cool website. Anyone interested in reforming a new team for the netbook of traps is eagerly sought!
Current status: Abandoned.
Team leader: Nobody, but the volunteer who would reform a new team.

Netbook of UNDEAD
From necromancers raising skeletons, to barrow wights haunting lost burial mounds, this netbook expands on one of the favorite creatures of the game: the undead. The netbook's status is currently unknown, so tell us if you would like to reform that team on your own.
Current status: Unknown (probably abandoned).
Team leader: Unknown.

Netbook of WITCHES
No heroic fantasy setting would be complete without warlocks and witches. This netbook provides the most extensive material on witches, but also rectifies the prejudices they suffered over the ages, so in this netbook witches appear to be much more than just evil female sorceresses.
Current status: Team is active; netbook is in its final stage.
Team leader: Timothy S. Brannan
